The Making of Persian Oriental Rugs

Some of the most famous oriental rugs are those that are made in Iran. These Persian Oriental rugs have been made by the people of this area for thousands of years, and continue to be made today. Although in modern times some of the rugs are made through a mechanized process, there are still a lot of people and companies who make these carpets by hand, and these are the most sought after of all the Persian Oriental rugs. The industry is suffering a bit lately because there are people in other countries that are now making imitation Persian rugs, as well as cheaper versions of these rugs.

Many of the makers of these rugs still use traditional designs that have been passed down through their families. These have been classified into a number of different design types, including paisley patterns, historic monuments and Islamic buildings, spiral patters, tree patterns, and many more. Besides using different patterns, these rugs also might use a number of different layouts. Sometimes the pattern takes up the entire rug, sometimes the same pattern is repeated over and over, and there might be a central medallion. There are so many different options for how the rug can be designed and laid out. In modern times, sometimes they use computers to generate life size designs on paper for the weavers to copy.

Persian Oriental rugs that are hand woven can be made on a number of different types of looms. Those that are made by people of nomadic tribes are usually made using a horizontal loom, since these are easily taken apart so that they can be moved when necessary. These looms are usually smaller and do not produce as high quality work as some of the larger vertical looms. Those who are not nomadic tend to use the easier to use vertical looms. Vertical looms come in a variety of different types, and can be used to make carpets of any size.

The carpets are made by weaving the materials (usually wool, but sometimes silk) on the loom. Knots are used to create the pile and the design. There are a number of options for types of knots, with some being more common in one area than in another. Depending on how complicated the design is these Persian Oriental rugs can take months or years in order to finish. Different tools are used to help in the creation of the rugs as well.
