Hand Made Oriental Rugs
An authentic, genuine Oriental rug is hand carpet that is either knotted with pile or may be woven without pile. Make no mistake about it.
Rugs that are produced using a machine that are not knotted by hand or woven by hand are not genuine hand made Oriental rugs.
The real thing usually comes from China or Vietnam or Turkey or maybe Iran and India. This is a great part of their culture and livelihood.
And although the cultures from the countries listed above differ somewhat, they still share a common denominator in this one thing.
There are many kinds of handmade Oriental rugs with each one displaying part of its own unique culture on the rug. Dating back to ancient
Persia, this art of carpet weaving shows off the very distinguished culture and art of the ancient Persians.
In 2008 alone Iran exported over $420 million of the hand woven carpets. It is estimated that Iran has 1.2 million weavers making carpets for
domestic use and for international exportation.
However more recently Iranian carpets have been met with some stern competition from other countries producing “fake” versions of the Iranian
rugs at much cheaper prices.
The material used in weaving these rugs vary from wool which is the most common to cotton which is used in most of the workshops that employ
mechanized production. There are many types of wool used in the weaving process. These kind include Kork wool, Manchester wool and Camel Hair
wool.
Although carpet weaving has largely become mechanized, the hand woven versions of the rugs can still be found when search for diligently but
you will have to pay a higher price when you find one. But when you have found one you love, and one that brightens up the décor in your living
space, you can cherish it for many years to come.
